Extension & Refurb | Tillicoultry
Our client approached us looking to radically overhaul her typical end-terrace house. Having spent 35 years of her life living abroad, she wanted a retirement home that would be unique and personal to her tastes.
Located on an elevated position at the foot of the Ochil Hills, the property had the potential to be provide one of the best views in the country.
The project design consisted of a complete redesign of the internal layout and two-storey extension to the rear. The internal layout design was based on the client's desire for a flexible layout where she could easily change the function of the space - the need to switch from lone-living to accommodating several guests was key.
The main hosting space consists of an open-plan Kitchen, Dining and Living space, positioned over two-storeys and connected by a spacious new stairwell. There are three 'sleeping spaces' over three stories which can be adapted for other uses when not hosting guests. The Loft Space was renovated to allow for a guest sleeping space or snug and was connected to the main space with a new, contemporary spiral stair.
The extension design has a simple but striking form which kept the cost and complexity down, while the choice of using timber cladding allowed us to focus on detail to add richness to the design, while maintaining the a clear divide between the existing and the new. The off-centred angle of the roof is designed to maximise solar-gain while reducing the impact of shadows on the neighbours to the north, ensuring that this ambitious proposal would be viewed favourably by the Local Authority.
