Extension | Alloa

We were asked to design a single-story extension to replace the client’s ageing conservatory, which was suffering from maintenance issues and being uninhabitable due to leakage, and erratic temperatures.

Our brief was to design a simple but considered extension of the same internal footprint as the current conservatory, in order to provide a habitable living space which would be better connect the kitchen, living and dining areas while improving access to the rear garden.

Our solution was to open up the space by removing the exterior wall to create an open-plan living-kitchen-dining space at the rear of the house, where our clients can benefit from a much improved connection to the back of the house and the garden, which sits under a forest.

We retained the height difference between the existing house and the extension to subtly define the spaces, while defining site lines from within the internal spaces.  The roof was designed with a cantilevered cranked-steel solution, allowing frameless glazing on three side and providing unobstructed views of nature from all three internal areas.
